Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father, who was a carnival barker, passed away at the age of a tiny girl, requiring her mother to help support the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth went to school and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. But she quit school after just two years in order to explore a career in acting. This path was fraught with problems. After obtaining a position in New York as a model for a detective magazine she was unable to get jobs for stage. The following job she got was an "hat check" girl for a nightclub but she quit and returned to Boston. She was an usherette during the early morning hours and also performed at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
